Maya The Poet
Maya's poetry is extremely riveting. Her first poem I got the chance to read was titled "Why You Talk So White." The metaphors and analogies she used to confront the racial issues going on in America are astounding. As an African American female, I could relate to some of the things being said. The line that struck me the most was, "But it seems like you blame me, for being born in a former British colony, I sound white? As opposed to what? Sounding American?" I have witnessed some members of the black community criticizing those who speak articulately, and Maya's ability to confront such large and valid points so eloquently is, at the least, impressive. Her other poems, especially "Comb", all touch on very deep and thought-provoking ideas and issues through eloquently worded metaphors and story lines. I admire her captivating and powerful talent, and will continue to support her poetry.
